It is a city, and it is separate from Spruce Creek Preserve, a community in Dunnellon that has its own page, and from Rainbow Springs, an unincorporated area that borders the city to the north. What it is like to live here
The city says the Town of Dunnellon was formed in 1890 and is named for railroad man John F. Dunn. Phosphate mining gave it the Boomtown nickname, and the city marks that history each spring with the Boomtown Day Festival. Rainbow Springs State Park, at 19158 SW 81st Place Road, is a first-magnitude spring on the Rainbow River and is open from 8 a.m. to sunset daily. The city’s departments include Community Development, Police, and Public Works, which covers storm water, streets, and parks and recreation.
